STUDIO MELLONE FOR NORDIC KNOTS

A new chapter in warm modernism unveils with a four-piece rug collection by Studio Mellone, the namesake practice of Brazilian-born, New York-based designer Andre Mellone.

A cinematic video showing a man driving a vintage green Volkswagen with silver detailing through the streets of São Paulo. Three rolled rugs are secured on the roof of the car. The surroundings shift between lush greenery and tall city buildings as the car moves through the urban landscape. The on-screen text “Out for Delivery” appears over the footage. The video ends as the car pulls into a garage and the driver steps out. The text “Studio Mellone × Nordic Knots” appears on screen. Atmospheric background music plays throughout.

FROM SÃO PAULO

The project began with a single idea: a rug should define a room as profoundly as its architecture. Mellone envisioned pieces with dual capacity; that could blend into their surroundings or transform the entire space, depending on how they were used.

Each design carries his architectural sensibility: the rhythmic elegance of Art Deco, the disciplined clarity of Bauhaus geometry, and the grounded warmth of South American modernism.

"Video showing designer Andre Mellone as he presents his home in São Paulo, Brazil. The film moves through a modernist interior with warm wood panelling, sculptural mid-century furniture, open-plan spaces, and large glass walls opening onto a pool surrounded by lush greenery. Rugs from his collaboration with Nordic Knots — Indore, Dots, Pond, and Normandie — are placed throughout the house, anchoring the spaces. A voice-over narration accompanies the visuals. What is said in the video (voice-over): “This house. I know it too well. I moved that chair 17 times today. And the pool? The one I made look effortlessly inviting. I've been effortlessly avoiding it for two years. My father would think that. That's funny. He always said I overthink everything. He was right. Even after, what, 20 years of doing this, I still can't explain it properly. Ideas don't show up politely. They just barge in. Design isn't really the things you choose. It's the things that you use you.”"

The collection features four designs: Dots, Indore, Normandie and Pond. Normandie evokes the grandeur of early transatlantic Art Deco ships. Dots brings rhythmic softness through a circular motif. Indore reflects the interplay of nature and structure in Brazilian architecture. Pond embodies the shimmer and stillness of water through meditative abstraction.

BEHIND THE DESIGN THE NYC STUDIO

From architectural thinking to hand-knotted form. A glimpse inside Mellone’s New York studio, as the collection comes to life.

Trained as an architect and shaped by decades in New York’s design world, Mellone brings a studied eye to everything he creates. Known for subtlety, precision, and restraint, this debut product collection translates his approach to texture, materiality, and form into a new medium.

"Video featuring designer Andre Mellone through a series of calm, reflective shots in his studio. The video shows him seated at his desk, looking into the camera, sketching geometric forms, alongside close-ups of sketches, colour palettes, and visual inspirations. A voice-over accompanies the visuals. What is said in the video (voice-over): “Did he just tell me to relax? And then comes the classic. What inspires you? Oh, all sorts of things. Sometimes it's a sharp angle or a curve. Never intended to be beautiful. Hidden in the chaos of a traffic jam. Sometimes it's just a moment. The world rushes past and all finally becomes clear.”"
