Explore the lavish world of artist Gergei Erdei
Grand – Leo in the home of Gergei Erdei.
Gergei Erdei is a London-based creative specialising on interior decor. His apartment is located on a tiny street with Georgian buildings near Holborn in London where he has created a world inspired by the city of Rome and interiors from the 70s and ‘80s. Erdei styled the Grand rugs in Chestnut, Leo and Moss in his elegant and eclectic home where they were in perfect symbiosis with his collection of furniture and interior color scheme.
We asked Erdei some questions to learn more about what inspires him and what he is up to at the moment.
Describe who you are, in one sentence?
E: I would say I am a creative and a story teller. I can design anything and through my designs I try to tell stories.
The artist himself.
What kind of projects do you work with?
E: I design interior decor – tableware, cushions and other printed textile products. I recently started to work on a resort wear collection so I will soon be launching silk kaftans and pyjamas. Both for men and women. As most of my prints are hand illustrated I often design exclusive designs for Matches Fashion and a new collaboration is about to drop with Browns and Farfetch. I recently started to style events for luxury brands, which is super refreshing because you can really get creative and create something memorable.
How would you describe your style?
E: It used to be very Roman inspired because I lived in Rome while I designed for Gucci, however this has changed and the new collection will be completely different compared to what I have done previously. It felt super refreshing to explore new sources of inspiration and to create something new and different but still antique-inspired.
What inspires you?
E: Pop culture and style icons of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Interiors from the same era. I source lots of vintage clothing for print and colour references. I go to many flea markets and decorative fairs. I always layer different periods and style directions in my design so it’s a mix of everything that I feel is relevant and could bring joy to your home.
Any special interior tips or advice you can share with us?
E: No rules. Be brave to experiment with patterns and colours. Find what you like inside and don’t follow trends just because you see them on Instagram. It’s much cooler to create something that is a reflection of your personality.
Do you have a favourite object/ design piece?
E: In my home? I have a burl wood and glass Italian display stand from the ‘70s. It has a glass surface inside where you can place a sculpture or something and you can switch on a light that lights up the object through the glass. It’s very dramatic and I like statement pieces.
Grand – Chestnut and his prized possession, the burl wood and glass display.
Any ongoing or interesting upcoming trends you see?
E: Hollywood regency and shifting towards the ‘80s. Lots of white and pink and travertine with rattan furniture.
What does home mean to you?
E: A safe place and a portrait of your personality.
Which is your favourite Nordic Knots rug, and where would you use it?
E: I like your Grand collection because it’s simple yet very sumptuous and reminds me of the carpet floors of the hotels and offices in the ‘60s. It works really well with my vintage furniture. I also love the Elder in Terracotta. I would use that on the terrace of a summer house.
